How to bypass the set up gmail?

Hi every body! I'm new here. This is my first post.
I'm with T-mobile and I do not have internet service option for my line.
I got a new G1 last week from local craiglist people.
After inserted my card and setup gmail account, I always get error message tell me there is a problem to connect to the server.
Is there something wrong with my phone? Or because I don't have internet service?
I really appreciate the help from all gurus
 
because you don't have a data plan most likely, you'll probably either need to get a data plan or unlock it.

i know how to get a data plan (go to tmobile)
i do not know how to unlock it.

either way you'll probably need a plan. but there's probably another fun and code filled way to get around both and have a device for surfing wifi.
 
The Sim Card you are using does not have a data paln. You'll need to activate the phone with a sim card that has G1 data plan before you can use it (switch back the sim cards)...
Maybe add the dataplan online and remove it later
or call 611 to add it and remove later
or contact the craigslister to help you out...

I think the phone works best (optimal) with a data plan, except you have wireless connections all over where you live/work...

I don't want to pay for data plan because I already had wireless internet service for my laptop. May be the phone need to be unlock.
 
You dont need an unlock.
I have 2 phones, only 1 with data plan, and I had the same issue. I just activated the non-data phone with my data-sim card and Voila!

If you add the data plan for 1 day, you will be prorated and not have to pay the monthly rate... The phone is not locked and does not need an unlock....
 
you must have an internet access, i don't know how this is exactly in u.s but everyone in my place has access to the internet with no extra fees (whether you're using a postpaid or prepaid sim card). You have to activate it and there's no other way around for this.
 
What do you mean unlock when you have a phone that locked to your carrier?
Call 611, enable G1 plan. Activate the phone then call back cancel it. They will charge you for few cents or a buck.
 
Even though I go through safe mode (says safe mode in lower left corner), it brings me to the android gmail setup screen and I can't get past it. My phone is unlocked and I am also out of the country so I do not have access to my Tmobile data plan right now.
