How to break the ice without rambling?

Recently, I moved on from HS to college and now I'm in a whole new state with a wider variety of people. In HS I never was romantically involved and have never had a boyfriend, basically because high school guys never interested me (nor were any of them interested in me). Anyway, now that I've moved out into the real world...I have seen a few guys (one guy in particular) who has sparked some interest. I see him a few times around campus and there is a time when we are both together in the same hallway in which I could take some initiative to ask his name. However, because I am PAINFULLY shy, this is a very daunting task.

Because I see him reading a lot and he looks like he probably cares about his education, I'm thinking about asking him about courses to register for for the upcoming semester. However, I tend to be a rambler (as you can tell) and don't want to annoy/piss the guy off.

How do I:

A. Break the ice in a non-creepy manner
B. Not ramble on and annoy the guy
C. Make an impression on him
D. Hopefully get his name so I can add him on facebook...?

***Note: Physical impressions won't exactly help in my case. I am a fuller figured girl and I also wear glasses more often than not. I will likely do my hair and makeup, but not any different from how I usually would, just because I already know that the best way to get to know someone is to be yourself.
