How to best make an image of the C drive?

I am building a new pc, and am going to install my windows xp home on that. then I plan to add msn, firefox, and nod.

After this, I would love to make an image, to use when the system crashes.

I just don't understand HOW to make the image, and what i could include in the image to restore when needed. Does one burn an image to a normal dvd disc?

and when the os has crashed, how does one put the image back?

thank you for explaining! I'd just like to understand how image making could be useful ?
 
You can't burn a image of C drive... In fact, you can... But that will never work! There's nothing you can do... Just copy/burn that WinXPHome that you have it... (If it's not yours).
