How to backpack across Scotland?

For my 18th birthday (I'm only 16 now, but I'm planning ahead), I want to go backpacking across Scotland. I've backpacked in Spain with my parents and a few relatives, but this time I want it to be just me and my friends. Anyways, how would I go about this? I think we'd have to buy plane tickets to Scotland, but after that what do we do? Thanks!
