How to avoid Verizon data plans?

I am eligible for an update as of today and want a palm pixi plus. It has wi-fi capabilities and my dad is not willing to pay for a data package. Is there any way i can cancel the data package after a month or just not pay for it from the start? I will use wi-fii but not 3g...my dad will pay for a 15 dollar a month package though but i would still want to cancel it after a month. Please tell me if i can pay for a 15 dollar a month package but mainly if i could cancel after a month or not pay it at all!!! Thanks
