How to avoid data plan for blackberry curve 8900 ATT?

I have a blackberry curve 8900 for att. However I do not want to pay for the data plan because I rarely use the internet. Perhaps when I am near wifi will i use the internet. Will unlocking the curve solve me problems? Or is there nothing I can do? I'd really love to use the phone but without the data plan. Thanks!
