How to attach speakers to LVD tv?

I have a new Sony 40" LCD tv and the built in speakers are pitifully quiet :(. So I was looking to put some speakers on the shelf and hopefully increase the sound. The problem is I really don't want to hook up a receiver like you would for a full stereo. I know I could connect some PC speaker set..but is there any type of SMALL receiver that just allows me to connect speakers and possibly hide it behind the TV? Any other ideas are welcome and I'd love to see product links.

Unfortunately, the only way to do what you want to do is with an outboard amplifier, like a home theater amp or at least a small stereo amp. The audio system in the TV is not designed to drive external speakers, so there are no connections for that purpose on the back of the set.

You do have auxiliary audio output connectors, but those are strictly for connecting to an amplifier.

It's often suggested to use an adapter in the TV's headphone jack, if it has a headphone jack, but that's also a poor solution. Again, the amplifier in the TV is meant for its internal speakers; it can't handle anything else with power and clarity.
