You could always write him a note and tell him you like him a lot, and would like to know if he would want to go to the dance with you and put it on his desk or in his locker or something like that. But honestly, guys like confidence in a girl, so try and build up the courage to go up to him and ask him, i know it's hard, but he would like that a lot better.
