How to add lyrics to MIDI files?

Hey, the other day, I opened a MIDI file using Winamp. To my surprise, the lyrics of the song showed up and were fully synchronized with the melody. I opened other MIDI file but no luck. I was wondering, how do you add such lyrics to MIDI files? I've also heard about SMF files, what are those?
