How The West Was Won - 'Smilebox' presentation.

Falling Upward

Anyone out there picked this up on Blu Ray?

The second disc contains the movie in a 'Smilebox' presentation. The film was made in Cinerama, which used 3 cameras to film shots, and the three images were 'blended' together on a huge wraparound, curved cinema screen...though you could see the joins.

What they have done for this release is actually recreated that curved screen effect, so that it looks like you are sitting in front of a curved screen.

It's interesting, though not entirely successful - depending on where objects are placed in the frame, they can look absolutely huge, or miles away...it's a bit like the old 'forced perspective' technique you used to see. And in some cases when two characters are in the same shot and talking to each other, they don't look like they are making eye-contact...a bit like an actor acting to a green-screen where a monster will be added later, and not quite getting the eyeline right.

That said...it does recreate the cinreama effect, because if you sat near the front of the cinema, you did get that slightly distorted effect anyway.

And they have managed to clean up those joins between the 3 pieces of film...mostly anyway.

It was an interesting process, and now always a successful one...but when they get it right it does look absolutely spectacular - particularly duriing a buffalo stampede sequence, and the vistas of the old west look magnificent.

There is a very good documentary on the cinerama process on the disc as well.
