This is too complex for this forum. Look up the Columban Fathers and the Culdees. this should give you a sense of the time period. Remember Ireland is an Island and the early Goth, Visigoths, Vandals, et al did not go to Ireland, neither did the Romans(They called it Hibernia--cold place-and left it alone-thank the heavens) so their society did not collapse when the bulk of Roman wealth and power dropped Europe and moved to Byzantium.

The crux can be found in the relationship between Augustine, Patrick, and their relationship to their environment.

In VERY brief, and likely with an unfiar slant on the issue ...

Augustine allowed and encouraged all things pre-Christian in Rome, North Africa and places within his influence to be burned and destroyed. This led to a loss of a lot of knowledge, further exaserbated by invading barbarians that also destroyed what little there was.

Patrick took an attitude that all stories, culture and learning were important and should be saved and copied down. He sent out missionaries to save what they could from the fires of Rome and the 'civilized' world. The Celtic church under Patrick and his contemporaries continued this attitude of being a repository of knowledge throughout their missions all over Europe.

As the world shifted from the Ancient world into the dark ages, the darkness was held at bay in a small way by Patrick and those of his stripe.
