How strong of an influence does evolution have on romance and attractions?

Sorry if this comes off as angsty, but I'm tired of being told one thing and shown another. Girls always will tell you that they prefer "nice guys" or "guys who actually care about them," but I'm starting to doubt that's true. From a survival standpoint, doesn't it make sense that women would be attracted to mates whose genes provide offspring with strong, aggressive traits rather than loving, passive ones? From all the anecdotal evidence I've heard, women tend to date a caring guy for a few weeks, then get bored and move on. What do you think?

Also, on an unrelated note, please tell me what you think of this sonnet:

"Frowneth the Gods"
Stephen Rodriguez

The wild rats grew in mounds of hay, they swarmed
and spun moist coziness into a bundle; they
would nibble on the horse-feed. When we mourned
the death of grandpa, ceaselessly, they swained*
and went unchanged; a botherless affair.
We didn’t mind them, long as they kept out
of sock drawers, corn-cans, things that we’d prepared
and worried over; they liked the old barn-house.
We kept two livelihoods at once: the lords,
the lesser lords, could live in harmony.
Two molds of one great fruit, we could afford
to share what we’d been shared. But when disease
struck down a hay-curious child, and another,
we had to find the nest and raise a hellish thunder.

*Swain: To court in a country-like manner.
