How Should I go about painting my room if I want to do a special design?

I want to paint one of my designs on the walls, I have light yellow walls at the moment, but I want to paint one of my characters on the wall. What sort of paint should I use? How should I go about protecting my furniture? What type of finish should I use? And all in general How should I go about doing this task?
