How should I BEST store these .jpeg images?

I have an option to use either my older terminal or my current terminal to store and view my thousands of .jpeg images.

I am scanning all my thousands of vacation photos into a digital format that will allow me to better store and view them whenever I please.

I have an option to use either my older terminal which uses Win XP Professional or use my current terminal that uses Win VISTA.

MY QUESTION IS THIS: Which option selection will allow the terminal to better use the available system memory?
With the massive amount of memory needed to store these many images, does it matter which terminal I use?

Both terminals have a 16Gig Hard drive.
 
You can scan all your images with low resolution if you wanna save the memory of your HDD.

Also, if you want better picture quality then please scan the image at approx. 600dpi, which will provide you average quality with normal disc space requirement.
