How should I ask him to the dance?

In my hs, there is a football player I'm pretty fond of. A lot of my friends keep telling me to ask him out, but I was worried about how it would effect our friendship if he said no or it didn't work out. Anyways, there is a valentines day dance coming up and I want to go with him. Is there a way I can ask him, casually, to go with me?
He doesn't know about the dance, it's not a school dance. It's a dance for something else I'm in.
 
well it depends if he is the dancing type or not. definately ask him, trust me girls are worse at rejecting than guys.
