I read something the other day discussing the role of France and Germany in the conflict. Since the UN never held Saddam Hussein to the inspections they agreed upon, the US invaded. France and Germany specifically showed little initiative to enforce the UN inspections. I'm not trying to defer any responsibilty from the US for this: I think you can make a very strong case for why we were wrong.
But I think that gets overlooked far too often...If the UN had held it's end of the bargain, it may not have ever happened.
