How reliable is renewable energy?

Only as re-liable as the health insurance industry! In MO. The energy industry is mandating a 1,000,000.00 insurance if you connect to the grid with a 10k 'home-grown' electric generation that adds to the grid. Until the energy suppliers allow some failures to proceed- They will rule what goes forward. Either way-they win? They have all the bases covered? They do!

Its as reliable as its source.

Wind is very reliable in windy area's however there are moving parts(Moving parts means more to maintain / break IMHO) however its pretty reliable where I live(always windy).

Solar is -very- reliable in the area's where I live as well, sun is out 300 days a year, and there is no moving parts to worry about breaking.

I would bet that fuel based systems are less reliable than a solar based system because of the strain on the engine creating the power (but this is my guess)

More than likely the weakness lies in where you store it (your batteries be them your own or whatever...])

This is coming more from a point of view of producing your own energy... I don't know a huge amount about how the large power plants actually operate to hazard a guess as to their reliability.

edit:

Also Geothermal power is very reliable if you are in an area that can actually use (the planet is always generating heat)
