How reliable are toyota cars of the 1990s?

I'm looking to buy a cheap first car and don't want to spend much repairing it all the time. Is a 1993 toyota corolla or similar my best option?

Do these cars ever break down or are they legendarily reliable even if they're over 15 years old?
