How often should I change the water in my fish tank?

My daughter received a 48 gallon fish tank with around 25 tropical fish in it. She has had it now for about one month and one fish died last Sunday. Another fish is sick now, why could that be?
I am new to the fish world and I don't have very much information on how to maintain an aquarium. How often should I change the water and do I have to change the food once in a while? I am feeding them Nutrafin Basix food.
