Nowadays it seems people mainly, iphone users, upgrade their cell phones annually due to constant yet sometimes trivial upgrades. I usually upgrade about a 1 year and a half waiting for the latest tech to work out its bugs and price to drop. Currently i own a blackberry storm, had it since February or so.
