How often do you need to change car oil?

I know it's really important to change the engine oil so I make regular checks however I'm starting to think that I may be doing it wrong.

The way I check is how I was taught when learning to drive. That is to use the dipstick and dip it in the oil when it's cold and if it is between the min. and max. mark then it's okay. Well I've been doing this for the past 10months with my car now and the oil never seems to have gone down. Does this sound right?

Yep! That's fine - do it on level ground and you will get the mark right.

Change the oil every 10,000 miles at least - I do mine every 6 months regardless of the miles I have done......clean oil means clean running and smoother operation.

Yes it is possible for it not to go down in that time.
Cars have different needs when it comes to oil changes for miles and time.
Your owners manual and/or service book should tell you when to do yours. It is never longer than 12 months though between changes.

Just because your oil level doesn't get lower doesn't mean you don't need to change your oil. If the oil is really dark and smells burnt, I would change it. Typically you should change your oil every 5000 miles depending on how the car is driven and the environment it is driven in. Are you stuck in traffic all the time and the car is at idle a lot? You should probably change your oil more often.

sometimes good cars dont use alot of oil.look in the owners manual and it will tell you how many quarts it holds.usually it good to change every 2000 3000 miles!!depending on oil.
