How often do the brakes need to be replaced for a 2004 Toyota Corolla?

I have a 2004 Toyota Corolla, and I was wondering how often the front and rear brakes typically have to be replaced? I bought the car used in 2006 with 43,000 miles on it, and it now has about 90,000 miles on it and I have never had the brakes replaced.

The front brake pads were replaced in 2006. I live in Louisiana and probably drive about 60% highway and 40% city and I don't ride the brakes or anything. I'm about to drive to Virginia and I want to make sure my car is in good shape for the trip.
