How often can I walk with a broken foot (in cast)?

Foreword: I broke my 5th metatarsal back in July. I didn't realize it was broken because I was broke (no pun intended) and was wearing cheap, crappy shoes. I thought the pain was from my shoes, and so when I finally saved up for good shoes I realized something was wrong since the pain didn't go away. It hurts pretty bad still, especially at the end of the day.

ANYWAY, I went to the doctor 2 weeks ago exactly. He diagnosed it as a fractured metatarsal (closer to the heel than the toe). He gave me an air/"walking" cast, which I have been wearing religiously. I have been trying to sit as much as possible, but my managers at work think I'm trying to be lazy. Yes, they know it's broken. They're continuously making me doing walking-intensive tasks to get out of my chair (I'm a cashier). I will stock things around me every so often, as this doesn't require much walking and I can sit down if my foot is beginning to hurt, but I'm being chastised for not stocking coolers (which requires walking to and from the front and back of our complex continuously).

Long story short - how often can I walk in my cast? Should I be staying off of it as much as possible? I know that each case is individual, but I have a feeling I'm right in not walking on it much. I'm going to my doctor after work, but I'm just wondering what others were told for good measure.
