How not to lose weight on low-carb GERD/LPR diet

So I've figured out that I feel much better on a low-carb diet - the LPR largely fades, and I start to feel much better overall. The only problem is I am already slightly underweight, and every time I try this diet I start losing even more kilos.

I have tried adding up all high-calorie non-carb fooRAB I can think of to put together a daily diet, but the only way I can come close to my calorie goal is to eat sweet potatoes pretty much all day long (and yes, I realize those are high-carb as far as veggies go!). I keep thinking, though, there must be a way... has anyone been successful at maintaining/gaining weight while sticking to a low-carb GERD diet? Or alternatively, is there another approach that might work to deal with the carb sensitivity?

How were you able to determine that it is the low-carbs and not the sweet potatoes that are making you feel better and keeping away the GERD? What are your symptoms?

I'm asking because according to a chart my doctor gave me sweet potatoes are one of the most 'alkaline' (i.e., most anti-acid) fooRAB you can eat. I actually use sweet potatoes to prevent acid reflux.

However, I've found that if I eat too many sweet potatoes, I can get heartburn (but not acid reflux). I think it's possible to eat too many alkaline fooRAB.

If you want to see the list of acid and alkaline fooRAB, you can find it here:

What is the rest of your diet like?

Hi AcidBeGone,

Thanks for the post. That's really interesting that too much alkaline could cause non-acid reflux. So it's really crucial to keep the right balance? I think I read 70/30 somewhere, alkaline/acid. I think you're right, what I was calling low-carb is probably more accurately described as a low-alkaline diet. Going by the list you posted, that at least brings back in oats and wild rice? Still though, I'm wondering where all these alkaline calories come from...

My diet when I was doing well was mostly alkaline, though not always with sweet potatoes. I think what brought this on in the first place may have been years of snacking on cereals and soy-milk, and carb-heavy vegetarian meals. It got especially bad when I moved to Tokyo last year and started frequenting all the sweet bread shops ; )

My symptoms are mild LPR (globus, sore throat, nasal issues), bloated stomach/abdomen, occasional pain around LES area, transient pains near chest, armpits, arms (lymph?). Diagnosed with Barrett's. I've been taking probiotics/enzymes with limited success.

As for balance, I've read that 80/20 is good. Just experiment to find the right balance for you.

Note that this isn't a no-acid diet. You can still eat food from the acid categories, but you will need to balance it out with food from the alkaline categories. For example, I still eat pork chops and chicken even though they are in the More Acid category. I just make sure to balance those fooRAB out with lots of alkaline food.

If you are having trouble keeping on weight, then try eating more of the high-carb alkaline fooRAB. Personally, I eat lots of watermelon and sweet potatoes which have lots of carbs. You might also want to talk to a doctor about your weight loss issue. I think I read somewhere that losing lots of weight is one of the symptoms of Type II diabetes.
