How necessary is it to replace shocks/mounts in my jeep?

I have a 2003 Jeep Liberty Sport. There's a creaking noise coming from the back, I thought it was the axle but it's not. I took it to the mechanic and they said that the rubber seemed dry so they lubricated it. Also, they suggested taking it back if the noise comes back and replace the shocks from the rear end or the mount. Apparently, the noise is still there. Replacing the shocks is a little expensive, so is it really necessary to replace it? or will it harm my jeep if I dont

Replacing shocks is really no big expense. Shocks are around $50 a piece, and anyone with a set of jack stands and wrenches could replace them. If I were you (and you don't think you could do it yourself), I'd take it to the mechanic and have them do it. between parts and labor, it should be around $180 or so (ballpark $50 a piece for shocks and extra $80 as a rough labor estimate). If they have to fix the mounts, it may be an extra cost, but shouldn't be too bad. It's a relatively cheap and quick fix that will make driving conditions more tolerable and extend the life of other parts of the Jeep. You should be glad it's not the axle! That would open up another, more expensive can of worms.
