The first step should be to have the oil pressure wet tested - lifter clatter is most often a result of insufficient oil pressure in the hydraulic lifters. It can also be caused by excessive wear in the valve train parts - cam, rocker arms and/or push rods.
If the problem is low oil pressure, the cause must be repaired before more serious engine concerns result.
