how much would an air conditioning compressor cost to change on my car?

my a/c compressor went on my 93 cav z24 3.1 i heard that since it blew it sent shit throughout the a/c system and if i put a new compressor in that it would blow too. is this true? also, about how much would a shop charge to do the entire proces of changing the compressor and making the a/c work again?
 
well not sure about a shop charge but the AC compressor on my 98 chevy silverado truck with a 5.7L 350 cost about $275 and then the AC refrigerant was about $40 i think, i did it all myself, a shop would probably charge about 50-100 if not a little more for labor plus parts so it should be under 400 for you unless its something more than just the AC compressor
