How much will it cost to replace the Exhaust sytem on my 1994 Honda Accord EX?

I don't know anything about cars and I was told by a mechanic that there were holes all in the system and it would be $400 dollars to replace it, or he could use pipe "to make it quiet" for $200 dollars. I feel like I'm being cheated because I'm a twenty year old girl who knows nothing about cars. Any information would be extremely helpful. Thanks.
