How much will it cost to get my '00 Honda Civic's breaks fixed?

Every year during December they begin squeaking so we used to take it to a mechanic who would "fix" it for about 45 bucks. But we are getting tired of a short term fix:
1. what can I do about the breaks and
2. how much will it cost

I do not know anything about cars and I do not want to get taken for a ride. Thanks!
