How much should the number of "rings" matter in debating a player's greatness?

Shouldnt rings matter more because that's why everyone plays the game? The idea is to win the championship at the end? And one of the ways we measure the elite players, the very best in the game, is by how many rings they win. If you're an elite player, you should be able to elevate the teams you play for to a championship at least once or twice in your career. Winning a championship the biggest goal. Not only winning it but leading the team to the championship and things such as world series MVP to really show you were the best! Championships are the ultimate measurement of coming through in the clutch and playing your best with the pressure on. If rings dont matter, why should any players be playing to win at all? Or should it be at least used as a tie breaker? Winning that championship is the ultimate goal for all the players. Only the best players get it.
