How much psi should be in the front shocks on my mountain bike?

I have an older Jamis Dakota mountain bike. It's a hardtail with front shocks. Not sure if the shocks are original (bought it from someone). Is there a general guideline regarding how much pressure should be in those shocks? They seem like they should be a little harder (i.e. they're too squishy), but I don't want to over inflate.
The only marking on the shock is at the top of one of the struts: TPC....is that some sort of brand?

What is the brand of fork that is on the bike? That will tell you which website to go to to find out the answer you need. Every brand and model has this info on their website unless you have an older fork that is no longer supported by that manufacturer.

Edit: Twin Piston Chamber is the likely definition for this acronym see here: http://www.manitoumtb.com/index.php?page=tech so I can only guess that you have a Manitou fork, which one exactly is the bigger question. Check the site and compare all they have and try to match it up that way with the link I have provided you.
