How much of a role do YOU think military PC played in the Fort Hood shootings?

It is being widely reported that this person has had serious "issues" has had to have extra "supervision", and has been reported in a way that generally would have got him a discharge; special consideration may have been given him because of his ethnic background.
What I have heard, and read seems very consistent on this. Obviously hindsight is always quite good.

It would be unacceptable to ban people with Islamic sounding names from the military. However if a noticeable number of them start doing things like this, then perhaps they should be better vetted.

Apart from the fact that the military is not a hotbed of mental health in general, the last person you would expect to go postal on you would be a psychiatrist. Unfortunately people that are attracted to professions like psychiatry tend to need psychiatric help themselves and this is borne out by the high suicide rate among psychiatrists in general.

Easy access to weapons, as in the military and the mental instability of people who love their weapons or their authorization to write prescriptions is a dangerous combination.

When I was working with the military about twenty years ago, if you had a mental problem that required medication you were out. I am not sure I agree with that policy, but I can see both sides of that issue.
