how much is a reasonable cut for the author of a book?

if i write a novel, a swords-and-sorcery fantasy, and it is my first book, as the first in a series of around 10, how much can i expect to make?
 
Depends on how good your agent is. The agent will sell your books to a publisher and negotiate the payment. Most agents take either 10 or 15 per cent of the total.

Good agents get bigger advances for their authors. It can range, though, from £2000 up to £450,000.
 
Find an agent first. Talk with them. Make sure you speak with more than one agent, also. You're going to get different offers and some are going to be better than others. Besides, you've got to find the one YOU want to work with. Worry about that before worrying about pay.
