5 speed Broken tail light..., new brakes, newer cylinder, newer tires, 84,000 miles...its pretty beat up but it runs good. I test drove it today and it seemed fine. How much would the average insurance be? They want $1000 for it. Good deal?
I already had my dad and uncle look at it...My dad knows how to fix cars and my uncles a mechanic (he works in the shop) and both of them said there weren't any problems with it.

I would have a mechanic look at it before spending any money.
2 weeks from buying it and it might need $500 worth of repair.
If you don't care then do what he said...take $800 cash and lay it down on the car. Seeing money is powerful. If he doesn't bite walk away. You need to set a budget for yourself with a limit. There are tons of cars for sale.

Broken taillight means no passing inspection. Is it inspected? Will it pass inspection? Emissions?

I have worked for the insurance industry for many years. Most adjusters would take condition, mileage and current market of those vehicles into consideration before making a value or worth of it.
If you are looking to get your money back in a couple years then I would look for the same year vehicle or year newer, and see what they are selling for in your local area. Just in case someone hits you are you wreck the car, you know you are covered.
Insurance companies only cover fair market value. So that is only what they are entitle to pay.
$500.00 to $800.00 sounds fair. I would not pay $1000.00. Make sure the mileage is correct, this seems very low for that year. 84,000 miles should show on the overall vehicle, as far as condition goes.
Good luck

Celicas are very reliable, 1984 is old but you definetly get alot out of it before it dies, id say low ball him to 800 dollars....insurance company has to appraise the car, but a car that old shouldnt run you dry like the newer celicas, great first car though!
