How much exercise do sporting dogs need per day?

I know every dog needs exercise but do sporting dogs need more exercise per day than other dogs? If so, how much? And since most sporting dogs are larger, do you think one would be okay living in a townhouse with a medium fenced-in backyard? There is also a walking trail in my neighborhood and my aunt has an in-ground pool that she allows her dogs to swim in. So do you think I would be okay with a sporting type dog? And how much exercise would they need?
