I am about to invest into an older car (1971 Cadillac) and need to know how much i'm going to be spending.

How much does a new engine cost? not preferably just for the car but in general for older cars in case I wish to change my mind.

How much does it cost to get the new engine installed into the car? (I'm looking for ranges)

Please answer these questions on their own not just one number need to know with full details.

Well, when that engine gets close to 250,000 miles you *may* need to rebuild it as you cannot get a new engine for it. A rebuild will last you a long long time

But you CAN get a big-block chevy motor that will fit, but you will need a transmission adapter.

They run about $5000 ready to run

A small block chevy would be a good alternatinve...same adapter, but you can get a complete engine for under $2000, it would only have 250hp or so.

installation $600 to $1200

Cost usually involves installation which can be from $500 to $2500 depending on the condition of the engine.

GET AS MUCH INFORMATION AS YOU CAN before making your decision. Since it seems you do not have that in-depth car knowledge, you won't have what goes with it: how to act around people within this field. All within the realm of avoiding the "bamboozle".

I suggest searching out for those who have experience in Yahoo! Answers. Here's the top answerer in Chevrolet for you:

Some questions:

1. Is this vehicle road-worthy at the moment?

2. What is the current condition of the motor it has?

3. Are there other conditions that haven't been addressed on it?
If the motor is fine, check with the owner about these other areas to adjust pricing probably.

4. Is the current owner of the vehicle "wanting to rid themselves of it"?
This says they are asking for what seems like a below average price to account for repairs. You might be able to haggle the price down with costs knowing the correct costs (the reason why you're asking HOW ABOUT THAT?)

5. Is the current owner of the vehicle "parting" with it?
This says they are asking for a premium price.

Depends, If You Want A 351, It'll Cost You About 3 Grand.
If You Want A 390, It Could Cost Between 5 And 6 Grand.
If You Want A 450 It Could Cost 7-10 Grand.
If You Want A 574, Which Is Exteremely Hard To Find, It Could Cost 20-25 Grand.
If You Just Want An Engine That Runs It Could Be 1-2 Grand.

Labor, Depending On The Condition, It Could Cost From 500-5 Grand To Get It Installed. JMHO. -Vic.
