How much data are you using per month?

After AT&T's announcement to get rid of unlimited data, I'm curious to see how much data people are really using.

After logging in and navigating T-Mobile's awful and bloated webpage, I was able to check my usage for the past several billing cycles... (Try this link after logging in to my.tmobile and scroll to the bottom for data usage in MegaBytes). And yes... I know there's an app for that.. but I'm not crazy about it.

Anyway, I'm using about 300MBs a month. I don't consider myself a data hog since I don't stream videos too frequently and I rarely rely on tethering my laptop, but I do use GPS navigation pretty frequently, as well as a plethora of text based news and social applications.
 
It would be interesting if I checked my past data usage as well. Everyone is up in arms about the limited data policies that carriers are starting to put into effect... and I am not really sure if they will affect me or not.

I do not tether much, as of right now... so I do not need to worry about that. I assume I am under most bandwidth caps as well.
 
This AT&T move is very unfair and I'm thinking this make many AT&T users switch to other carrier,actually I just check the T-Mobile Data net in Puerto Rico and really sucks no 3G just edge if not AT&T is Gone.
 
I haven't been using that much, but once I get a decent Android phone, I expect to.

Regarding moving to another carrier: I suspect it is only a matter of time before they all do this. Data usage is just going to grow, and ultimately, they need to make money.

I don't like the fact that they charge $20 for tethering, but do not add more data allowance when you do that.
 
I average about 15gb a month. Yes, i said 15 gigabytes! Tmobile went as far as capping my data speed for more than 10 days this month to 50kbps(i went over 10gb after 2 weeks). Not that their data speed cap actually worked(it didnt ). I tether exclusively for all my data connections

I've used about 300MB this month and I have 5 days left in the cycle. but usually I'm a little higher than that.
 
I've been pondering changing network providers the last couple of months. T-Mobile UK give you unlimited data (1GB cap) and the one I was planning to switch to only gives 500MB. So I've been running NetCounter for the past month to see how much I really use. It's sat at 25MB on Cell, and 230MB on WiFi. So even if I never used WiFi, I'd still only be on around 250MB.

I guess it's important to note that I haven't done much at all on my phone in the last month. Maybe used the Browser twice. So that 250MB is nearly all background data (few emails, checking for updates, etc). There have been quite a few app updates thanks to FroYo being released of course.
 
Next time you upgrade your contract get them to give you the 1Gb data allowance... if you go through customer support they should give you the upgrade for free especially if you are a repeat customer.
 
Well the 500MB one is with Three, I'm currently with T-Mobile who give 1GB. So I won't be a repeat customer if I move to Three.

I hardly use any calls or texts, so I need the cheapest monthly contract. I want the shortest duration (18 months max, preferably 12 months), and an HTC Desire.

The way it stands at the moment I have a choice of:

Three: ?5/m, 30 day contract, 500MB/m, phone SIM Free from anywhere ?400. Total if kept for 18 months = ?470.

Cheapest T-Mobile contract with HTC Desire: ?30/m, 18 month contract, 1GB/m, phone ?340. Total = ?880.

Orange/Voda/etc are all very similar to T-mobile.

So, as you can see, T-Mobile costs twice as much as Three, and with Three I'd be on a 30 day contract so could upgrade whenever I like.
 
... i'm on Orange. and after about 2 weeks of bashing their customer services i am on.

Free HTC Desire (in Black)
18 Month Contract

unlimited Orange to Orange
500 txts
unlimited data (500 Mb before they reduce speed)
free 16Gb SD card.

and all that is only costing me ?30 a month. i could have upped that to the 1Gb Data but i would have either drop my cross network mins to 600 or add ?5 a month.

But if you are only wanting data and not many calls / txts i'd be supprised if you had to pay more than ?20 a month...

Try calling T-mobile and ask for customer services because "I'm thinking of going to O2"
 
Right - exactly.

This is the thing though - 2 months ago T-Mobile had a ?15/m HTC Desire contract, for 18 months, phone costs ?160. That would have been OK. But they dropped all the ?15, ?20, and ?25/m contracts at the start of May. The cutoff point is ?27/m. Anything more than that and it's cheaper to buy the phone SIM free over an 18 month contract. I'm willing to pay a bit more to have an unlocked (i.e. SIM free) phone I can sell for more at the end, and not be tied in to a long contract I'll be dying to get out of after 12 months.
 
I checked on Vodafone, Orange, and T-Mobile website, and none advertise 12 month contract with the Desire. If you dig around you can find 12 month contracts, but you have to pay a small fortune for them, as high as ?80/m from one place. Certainly not for less than ?27/m + free phone anyway.

I have to buy two phones as well, because my partner is also due an upgrade from her G1 at the same time as me, and I'm sure you know how things work with our better halves...

The more I think about it the more I'm tending towards a SIM free phone + cheap ?5/m contract. No long term things, unlocked already, freedom... etc...

I'll certainly be trying the "I'm going to leave you for " line with T-Mobile first. I've been with them nearly 15 years when they were still One2One.
 
Yes Yes... sorry if i didn't make it clear.... never buy a contract with out speaking to the companies customer support people on the phone. They have a different computer system (with different prices/ offers) that even the people in their stores don't. i'll give orange a quick call and let you know what they say... give me 5
 
I'm under 500mb a month, and my wife, well she uses close to 1gb a month.

It looks like I'll be able to live easily within the 25 dollars 2gb tier, if I choose to save 5 bucks a month.

I might even be able to live within the 200mb a month for my usage. I'm at 150mb right now, and I'm halfway into my billing cycle, so I'd have some overage if my pace continues.
