How much battery will I need?

Hey guys. I am getting a 2wd SC10 to get myself in to racing. See if I like it. It has the Traxxas Velineon system on it. I was wondering what battery will be best for that? Also what will work long enough for a race. Like how many mah does it need to be? I am not sure I want to pony up for LiPo. If I end up getting in to racing more I will obviously upgrade but we will worry about that when the time comes. Thanks. Sorry I am electric noob.

It's worth it to get budget lipos straight off the bat. I run Orion 5500 90c in my xxx sct with a 7.5 and have more than enough juice. I ran it for 20 minutes today to see what temps would get to and used like 2500mah or so? I run 3800 60c in my tlr22 and can run two qualifiers on the same battery if I wanted.

you really do want to go LiPo. NiMh is going away rapidly. LiPo batteries don't cost any more and lots of times less than NiMh. You do need a charger that will charge LiPos which can run from ~$40 to as much as you want to spend.

SCT racing is way popular and you'll find loaRAB of support for it.

I also agree with the LiPo statement.

For all official races, the only thing you can run is 2S, so most club races stick with this as well.

I have a 2wd SC with a Castle SCT corabo in it (similar from another company to your velineon setup), and with a 5000 mah battery pack I can run for 30-40 minutes on the track, since I'm often bursting and then coasting around a turn to maintain traction and not roll, or waiting to land from a jump. More aggressive driving will cut a 5000 mah pack to about 25-30 min of run time.

A 5000 or 5300 mah 2S pack like I run in most of my stuff will cost you about 25-30 bucks at someplace like hobbypartz, or about double that at most local hobby shops, while most nimh batteries will cost 20-30 bucks as well with much lower run times and a shorter lifespan on the battery.

Well LiPo it is then. Ha ha made that easy. Thanks guys. I should have no problem running LiPo through the Velineon system? Should I look in to a fan or anything? Just want to run as efficient as possible.

The Traxxas Velineon system is designed for Lipo.
I can't remeraber if it has the ability to turn off the low voltage protection like their standard xl5 does or not. If so, make sure the low voltage protection is ON. You don't want to drop the voltage in the LiPo too far, or then it will have a short battery life.

Running 2S you shouldn't have issues with heat as long as you gear sensibly. If you decide to throw on larger packs for bashing at a later point, then you may want to look into fans and the like. The easiest way is to go run flat out in some grass for about 5 minutes. If you can still touch and hang onto the motor and esc, they're not running too hot (be careful not to burn yourself if they ARE running too hot though). A cheap temp gun also makes this easier. Anything above 150° is pretty bad. Measure just after your hottest running that you're likely to do...if that is in grass, do it there, a track tenRAB to have lots of places you let off the throttle and let the engine cool, so you can get away with more and still stay within temp range for the end of the run.

Yeah I have a temp gun so thats no problem. Okay so nothing over 150 degrees. 2s LiPo should be good for racing. This will be a track baby more then likely with the occasional run off the track. I have my Savage to abuse. I will check on the low voltage deal. Thanks guys. Tons of help!
