How much battery does wifi/bluetooth/etc...suck?

Just to use apple products as an example, the iphone can only go for about 3 hours on wifi or 3g, yet the laptop can go for 8 hours ish with wifi on all the time.

There are plenty of "tips" on how to save battery life, but can anyone explain why certain things use so much more?

Lowering screen brightness to uncomfortably dim for example, usually only squeezes out a hour or so, yet I thought that screen brightness was the major energy waster, like how videos played for much less time than music.

Now I'm thinking it has to do with workload on the system. Can anyone give some detail?
