how many watts can speakers be on a 400 watt 4ch amp in my car?

if i have a 400 watt amp with 4 channels. can i run 4 speakers at 400 watts each. or do i need to have 4 speakers that come to 400 watts in total.

i have a feeling it is 400 watts each channel. because u can buy car stereos that give out 200 watts and most standard car speakers are under 200 watts.
