How many ride without the crash bar?

I ride with an engine guard for sure. Never slid one down the pavement but I'm a member of the '$hit I dropped my bike club'!!

By the way in a crash situation your footboard and bracket are way involved before the engine guard starts scrapping. Just look at this pic, this poor dude's footboard is folded up and it and the bracket are grinding away. The crash guard is just barely touching and probably keeping the bike upright instead of completely on top of the rider.
 
My engine guard has saved my ass and paint plenty of times, Slipes in the driveway, at the beerjoint, motel, ralley, driveway( again), yard, whatever. Took'em off for a while , had nowhere to hang my feet. Sure it looks cool but...at 55 I'm built for comfort , not for speed.
They did save my ass one time in W.Va when I hit an oilslick (from an 18 wheeler dump) midcurve. I watched my beloved '91 FLHS slide into a ravine. I spent two days in a coaltown hotel waiting for my family to come pick me up. Broken scapula, clavical, hip badly bruised. $6500 worth of damage to a $11000 bike ( been a while , but still my baby). Front end damage ...total. Paint ( Bright Candy Ruby, grin) none. I won't leave home without'em.

Last fall I had my kickstand up on a 2x6 changing the oil in all three holes in my street glide. The bike sat level like that for about an hr...I had completely finished my work and was about 20ft. away picking up the empty oil containers and stuffing them in a sack. I hear a noise and look in time to see my SG roll over and flop on it's left side. A gust of wind pushed it over. No back bag bars on the sg. I was working out in the gravel driveway as not to make a mess....The gravel worked a number on my right side bag and that latch. $275 to repaint the bag and another wrecked hardbag that came off a crashed bike that somebody gave me. I just got the bag back from the painter and installed last Friday. I installed some single bar bag guards before I repainted the bags. I've helped somebody pick up their bike that had guards and it didn't do anything to their bike....not a scratch. $275 for my bike falling over standing still. I liked the look better without the bag guards but.....I learned my lesson. I guess they can fall over.
 
My last accident a bus made a left turn 10 meters front from us and the engine guard save the bike and us.

I manage to control the bike but fall down. Thank God only bruses.

Wouldn't leave home without them!!!!
 
Just some of the damage from my high side in 2005. The handlebars, grips, tank, side covers, etc., escaped damage. My saddlebag, muffler, footboard, highway peg and the bottom edge of the front fender got the brunt of the damage. I have rear engine guards installed now. I'm more about function over style.
