How many ride without the crash bar?

I was going to pull mine off my newely accquired Road King classic, then decided to powdercoat them black along with the rest of the stock parts..

If it came with them, I hadn't been inclined to take them off. If it didn't come with them, I never thought about getting them.

They have their place. When my wife started to ride my 02 Heritage, I put them on. She stopped at a light and her foot slipped on some sand. The bike went over, the floorboard folded up and the bike came to rest on the crash bar. She held it there until I could get off my other bike and help her.

Just before that, she was asking me why I put them on when she was going to ride it, and never had them on when it was my main ride?? I told her that I couldn't stand the way it looked and couldn't find a set that I did like that didn't take away from the look of the bike. I told her it was for her protection. She thought I was full of crap and wanted me to take them off. She forgot about it and then she found out I was right.

They have their place, it just came down to personal preference.Would I take them off my RG... No. would I put them on my SB.... no.

It is not a crash guard at all and was never intended to be one. When you go down at speed on one of these big bikes those guards fold over like noodles. The are strictly for falling over while standing still or at the most 5 mph. The true name for those things are 'engine guards'

The older I get the safer I become.....

It was ugly when I was full of piss and vinegar..

Now it functional...footpegs, and soft lowers when needed....

Sooner or later..you'll say I should have left it on

You ride your way and I will ride mine, I ride for the fun of it, touring bikes can handle corners very well thank you. I have dragged my pegs, boards, and pipes all over the pavement. I have even run down some riders on sport bikes. Were they ever surprised to see me come pulling up behind them, couldn't get around em, but the more novice riders of their group couldn't lose me either.
Touring with a group is fun, but hitting the twisties hard is way more fun. Nothing like having the ol lady screaming like a cop siren. After two years she finally quieted down.

Amen.

When that bike falls over in a parking lot or in the garage or your driveway it's a No Biggie situation if you have the engine guards on - a couple minor scratches way down low on the guards is it. Those guards prop the bike up and protect it from end to end on a simple drop.

With no engine guards it's an instant Insurance Claim. Your choice on that one but to me it's a no brainer. Sure it might look sleek and cool with no guards on it but believe me S*%* happens and it's an expensive fall if you take them off.

For a bagger.....who doesnt have guards??

I went down this past may on a highway and slid for about 2 city blocks and you would not believe how much that front crash guard saved me, my legs and the right side of my bike...

I totally destroyed one saddle bag (no guards...wink wink) but I was amazed at the fuctionality of that front engine guard. This was my first time having gone down in my life. (drops dont count...shhhhhhhh)
