How many planets are there?

Pluto is mostly made of ice and doesn't have a regular orbit around the sun. It's too oblong for astrologists happy with defining Pluto as a planet. Unfortunately, this messes up the mnemonic device "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas" for the first letters of each of the planets M,V,E,M,J,S,U,N,P Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. Maybe she will serve Nachos! Condolences!

In our solar system, 8 or 9 (depends on what you consider a planet which some scientists believe it isnt.) However in the past 30 years, we have discovered over 300+ extrasolar worlds. Most of them are gas giants such as saturn or jupiter. Only a small handful are believed to be rocky.

Since Pluto is so tiny, many scientists hold that pluto is way too small to be considered a planet since many "plutoid" objects about the same size of pluto lie beyond the kuiper belt.

there are as of now, 8 known planets. Mercury, venus, earth, mars, jupiter, saturn, neptune, and uranus. 3 dwarf planets, which is wat pluto is in. There however is belief that there is another planet beyond the orbit of uranus. Due to the gravitational pull on it. However this planet has not been discovered yet. it was thought to be pluto, but it was later deduced that it obviously didn't.

In our solar system at this time, there are:

8 major planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune)
3 dwarf planets (Pluto, Eris, and Ceres)
Hundreds of thousands of minor planets (which include asteroids and Kuiper Belt Objects).
