I am dieting and I eat a lot of protein. I don't like to run and have no time to walk. I bought a bike. And ride about 2 1/2 miles a day. The thing that gets me though is most the time the bike is doing most of the work so i feel as if it is not a good exercise. I am 197 pounds.I am 5'8. I am muscular because I work out. And I just want to drop these stubborn 20 pounds. TIPS..DIET..MILES TO RIDE..I really hope there is hope for weight loss on the bike..help
I meant LOSE weight (:

Be very careful about losing muscle and not fat. You arent overweight, but if you want to lose 20 that is a big jump. If you are riding really fast doing sprints you will lose muscle. But 2 miles on a bike is really only like a half mile on a run. Definately more miles. Or learn to like running, the more you put into running the more you get out of it, also adds arm movement which can tone chest shoulders and arms. I hated running but once it gets easier your in the clear.

You can lose weight like that but keep in mind that at first 2 1/2 miles might seem hard, but after to days or so, thats not going to be enough to make a difference. As you start working out, make it harder and harder each time that way your body is always doing more... Maybe try going up a hill instead of all flat.

Also, eat small meals throughout the day and not really a heavy meal. Drink lots and lots of water.

Good luck!

First that's "lose" weight (loose means not tight...what you want your pants to be).

Next, 2.5 miles on a bike probably takes 15 mins or less. Not much of a workout. If your bike has multiple gears, set it to a gear that causes you to pedal a lot. You'll burn more calories keeping those legs moving.

Next, go however far you can go in about 1 hr. For good weight loss, your goal should be to shoot for at least 1 hr of exercise (cardio and strength training throughout the week) at least 5 days a week.

Don't forget to eat healthy, and get enough calories for your body to perform well.

Good luck!

I ride about 5-10 miles a day. Switch the gears around. Lower the gears when you are going fast: you will increase your heart rate. Raise the gears when you are going slow, it will be more difficult for you to get up to speed. Just like running, you will not lose weight unless you hear rate is high.

Well what you could do is ride your bike from New york to florida. I saw a show about a guy who did this over like a few weeks and he lost like 60 lbs!!

If you mean that you want to lose muscle you can cut back on protein and do more endurance/cardio exercises. Since you don't like running you can try an elliptical. Make your workouts longer and do them often.
Also work out before you eat because when you don't have fuel, your body burns muscle instead of calories.

If you lift weights then the 20 lbs. is from poor diet.

Book to read "How to Eat Move and Be Healthy" by Paul Chek.

Pedal harder when you bike or bike uphill, in the grass, etc....

2.5 miles on a bike isnt going to do much. a person in decent shape could probably run 2.5 miles in 20 minutes. going triple the speed of an average runner, 2.5 miles would probably only take you less than 10 minutes on a bike. you should focus on building your cardio by biking/running/swimming whatever for at least a half hour to an hour if you want to lose 20lb.
