how many miles into mexico does a regular car insurance cover?

i plan on traveling down there but am not sure if my insurance will cover me or if i should buy an extra one.
 
Many car insurance companies brag that their insurance covers you a certain number of miles into Mexico. The problem is, the Mexican government does not recognize US insurance. Insurance company employees are not told this. In my early days in the industry, I assured lots of customers that their insurance was good 60 miles in, not realizing the problem! If you are crossing so much as one inch into Mexico, definitely buy Mexican insurance. Otherwise you will be breaking Mexican law.
