How many hours should high school students spend on sports each day?

Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday I would spend two hours in karate class. On these days, when I came home I wasn't allowed to do any chores (except on Saturday), since my parents would consider it overwhelming for a high school student. On Monday and Wednesday, I would just stay one hour and 15 minutes after school and play soccer with my friends, but had to do chores on these days. Friday was my day of rest and just hanging out.
One of my nephews has football practise 2 and a half hours from Monday to Friday and his parents and I both think it's too much, but the coach said that it was a common thing. I'm sure there are students who could keep up good grades in high school while balancing this athletic workout, but I think most of them cannot without feeling burnt out. Isn't this just too much time. Remember, in addition to homework, you have to put aside personal time for revision. Also, what about chores and time to relax. This is a kid afterall, who has to be in bed by 10:30.
So, is this normal where anyone comes from and how many hours afterschool do you think students should spend on sports?

I think that you can spend as many hours on a sport as you wish if your interest is there. People can achieve uncommon feats if their heart is in it. It becomes effortless and not a drag.

There is no such thing as 'normal.' Go where your heart leads you and work will seem like play. One man's torture is another man's pleasure. Let your interests guide you.
