How many genres?

I agree that subgenres are important, but I only split my music up into these categories:

Punk
Hardcore
Emo
Ska
Metal
Indie

If I want to listen to something more specific than that I'll just choose a band.

No not Candlemass ARRGGHH! Seen them Live way back in 89 supporting NUCLEAR ASSAULT and I have always hated their image and operatic vocal schizz. Have they changed? I will take a look. Thanks.

So, by this logic, all melodic death metal is pointless and soft. I'm sorry, but melodic death metal is not pointless. Of course, there are many ****ty melodeath banRAB that seem to be more acquainted with power metal than death metal, but banRAB like Unanimated, Crown of Throrns, AT THE GATES all were melodic death metal. I think almost any metalhead would disagree that those three banRAB are soft and pointless.

I'd say metal and hardcore are the worst about subgenres. Seriously, you can add -core to the end of any genre and you will find out its already an established hardcore subgenre.

I personally lump all hardcore/metalcore/deathcore/grindcore together as hardcore, mostly for iPod convenience.

'Soften' not pointless and soft. Don't worry by the time you are my age there will be another 50 sub genres and then you can berate all the kiddies about how many there are ;)

i would just class Bowie as a rock artist personally. That's the reason for this thread-too many genres! I stick with as few genres as possible. It simplyfies things. The indie scene is even more diverse than the metal scene, yet there are very few genres there. Maybe it's an age thing. As you get older all that matters is the music, not what genre it is.

Bowie IS awesome, he has consistently made interesting and varied albums. A very talented guy.

I have just actually laughed at an inaminate object-my PC screen. So Death lyrics are slightly adroit to black lyrics-they are all crap so what is the difference?
