How many buttons should i put on my arcade controls?

6, I always do 6. I don't make cabinets but I do make custome arcade sticks and all of mine have 6 buttons. Now for me this stems fromw hat I use them for, fighting games. Most fighting games use 6 buttons and people will sometimes use 8 to put a button combo on the last 2 to make certain things easier to do. In tournaments this is illegal so I got out of the habbit of short cuts quickly.

Now most non fighting arcade games use 3 to 4 buttons so 6 would still work. And if you wanted to play some street fighter or MvC2 you will be ready to go with a awsome setup.
 
I am making an arcade cabinet and i was looking at making my own controls. I was going to make it a 4 players cabinet. I am not sure how many buttons each player should get. I was thinking 3 for each player. But then i saw some that were made and they have up to 8 buttons. any help on how many i should put in would be helpful.
 
well... i have no experience but I've seen lots of em and i think for a 4 player arcade bench would be... 3 to 4 buttons... 2 players go for 6-8 buttons per person but like i said i don't know much
