In Italy, the rule is: there are no rules.....Especially if they don't make sense!

I'm indebted here to the author Bepe Severigni (journalist and commentator on the Italian psyche) but what i've learnt is that Italians will always show a flagrant disregard for rules if there is no logic to them. Example, smoking in public places: despite protest from 'civil rights activists' (read 'smokers') on the day it was enacted there were no protests, no acts of civil disobedience and the fabric of italian culture did not cave in; Why? because it made sense (why inflict cancer-causing smoke on others??!!)

With road rules, however, if it makes no sense then it's not adhered to -

- Why have only 3 lanes when you can clearly fit 4 cars across? (and 3 bikes and a dozen scooters....?)

- What's with the 'no Parking' signs when you can always use every conceivable spare square foot of earth to fit a car onto (and yet they never impede a walkway, nor ever across a driveway....)

- why stop at a red light when I can easily turn into a gap of traversing traffic?

Once you get into the Italian mindset (they drive '3-handed' - one on the wheel, one on the gearstick and the other on the horn!!) you actually begin to be amazed at how, amidst the seeming chaos, traffic in congested cities simply "flows" far better than in anywhere else in the western world......in fact, once i return home after a couple of weeks in Italy i get frustrated by having to obey the rules again.....

Ms. 848 and I visited the factory last year, on our anniversary tour of France and Italy. (I used to work at the Lamborghini factory, so I know northern Italy pretty well). Anyway, visited the Lambo factory (of course), Ferrari and OF COURSE Ducati. Only bummer was that it was on Saturday, and the tour was good, but the line was shut down. Still good times. Bologna or Modena are cool towns, if you know where to go!

Not to hijack the subject from the Museo tour but oh what the hell.

Driving/riding in Italy, Greece and the general area is quite civilized. Try the mideast.
Saud, Jordan etc. Now that's a free for all.

Lets say you are on a road in the open areas and a train is crossing. And they run the long trains at ~ 15-20 mph. Takes an eternity for the frickin things to pass. Ok, like you had another choice so you stop. A guy pulls next to you. Not behind you, next to you. 6 more pull on either side. Of course on the other side of the tracks the same thing is happening. Then the train passes and there now are 20 cars, busses, semis, and dump trucks trying to be the first one to cross the tracks in a glob 50 feet wide crossing the road and spanning the flat lands. Once you are free, put your foot down as far as you want. The autostrada ain't got nuthin on this region. In the city it's simply who has the biggest balls and largest horn wins.

Italy will be a breeze for you.

Other thing that kinda blew my mind was the cost of the car rental. I can rent a manual transmission vehicle for like 180 Cnd for the 2 days we need it. If I want to rent an automatic for those 2 days it would cost 400 - 450.

Was thinking we'd get an auto so the wife could drive too but yeah...not gonna a happen at that frickin price...lol

I'll do the driving thanks...

Cheers
