My betta fish is around 1 1/2 and its been living in a small non filtered tank for his life with me.

just get him a good sized tank do some research it is very much necessary to hae a filter also...please go ahead and google.........

Define small?

If your unfiltered tank is less than 3.5 US Gallons I would recommend a 100% water change every 3 days.

Anything higher than that and you really do need a filter. Bettas can live in small spaces but that doesn't mean they're thriving. They're still fish and need space and quality water. It also means you can just do gravel vacs and partial water changes.

I personally wouldn't keep a betta in less than 4 gallons, and preferably 5.

Bettas have a lifespan of 3 to 4 years. They are usually around a year when they land in the pet store, as they don't come into their color until they are a year old. Therefore, you can expect your betta to live 2-3 years. I would suggest upgrading the tank to something larger, filtered, and heated. Contrary to popular belief, bettas are tropical fish and much prefer a heated tank.
